Stairway
to Oz
First
Digital Sync Contest
The
goal: Find the coolest sync between The
Wizard of Oz and Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to
Heaven.”
The
participants: Key, Michael Allen, Dave
Bytor and Dave T.
The Winner: MICHAEL ALLEN
To
recreate this awesome sync, unpause the Led Zeppelin IV (Zoso) version of
“Stairway to Heaven” so that the first note of the song coincides with the
scene transition to the first time Professor Marvel appears in the movie (he is
coming out of his trailer, walking down the steps).
Or, if
you can play Real Media files, the digital version is available for download here.
All of
the entries were very cool, and are worth checking out. Here are download links.
Each
entry deserves a commentary, which should be added soon.
The
fine print:
The
judging was done in two parts, by myself, Mike Casey, and Baker B.. Baker B. had no prior knowledge of who created each entry, and
chose Michael Allen’s clip as his clear favorite after viewing the digital
versions of all four. Since I knew who
found each of the syncs and I wanted to be objective about the judging, I
divided each into segments where it got a score from 1 to 4 (1 denoting that
the sync was poor during that segment, and 4 indicating that it was
awesome). That gave me a score of 1 to
4 for the sync when I took the time weighted average of the segment scores. For example, if a sync got a 2 for the first
quarter, a 3 for the second quarter, and a 4 for the last half, then the
overall score would be 2*(1/4)+3*(1/4)+4*(1/2)=(1/2)+(3/4)+(2)=3.25. Using this method, the scores were 3.42 for
Michael Allen, 3.29 for Key, 2.7 for Dave T. and 2.58 for Dave Bytor.
